Our spectacular Facilities Manager, Cody, has put together tips, tricks, benefits, and common courtesies pertaining to the steam rooms. Much of this information also pertains to the sauna rooms, and locker rooms in general. We hope you enjoy these beneficial amenities each visit!

Steam Room Benefits, Limits, and Common Courtesies

One of my favorite activities at the DAC is enjoying the steam room right after a hard workout. In addition to being enjoyable, there are many benefits to using a steam room. As with most things we enjoy, there are some risks associated with this activity. I hope that by sharing the information below, we can all take advantage of this awesome DAC amenity. For maximum enjoyment by all users, please follow all posted rules and basic common courtesy guidelines.

It is suggested that the steam room experience can; improve circulation, lower blood pressure, reduce stress, clear congestion, promote skin health, aid in workout recovery, loosen stiff joints, burn calories, boost your immune system and is also said to have cardiovascular benefits. Eucalyptus oil is often associated with the steam room and is thought to enhance or add other benefits. Eucalyptus is antimicrobial, is thought to stimulate the immune system, aids in clearing congestion, is pleasantly aromatic and relaxing. As a courtesy, ask the other users in the room if they mind before you spray the eucalyptus into the steam diffuser.

Despite the many benefits touted above, there are some limits and risks associated with the steam room as well: The high temperature and humidity can lead to dehydration or the onset of heat exhaustion. To minimize these risk it is advised to hydrate before, during, and after. It is also advised to limit your session to 15 minutes at a time. Tampering with the sensors in an attempt to increase the steam is not only detrimental to the equipment but can also make the environment unsafe for the users.

The heat and humidity can encourage the reproduction of bacteria and germs. As such, it is advised that if you are pregnant, immune compromised, or recovering from a surgery that you avoid using the steam room until cleared by your Doctor. We provide a Eucalyptus blend to not only enhance the steam benefits, but it is also antimicrobial. It can be used to spray the walls and benches before you sit down to sanitize the area. It is also recommended to rinse off after working out before using the steam room and to sit on a towel, which is also more comfortable. I also suggest users wear flip flops or shower shoes, which not only protects your feet from germs and bacteria but also provides additional traction to limit the likelihood of slipping on the wet floors. We also ask that you not shave in the steam room due to hygienic reasons.

As with most shared use spaces, a little common courtesy can go a long ways to increase the enjoyment for all users. In addition to the common courtesies mentioned above: If there are many people using the area, please be courteous and sit up to make additional room for others who wish to join in. Also, please refrain from stretching or working out. Not only can this be disruptive to the other users, but it is very easy to overstretch when your muscles are heated up causing injury. I’m sure those of you who already enjoy this activity, like myself, will continue to do so. I hope the information provided above will encourage others to give it try.
